General Tips for Cats and Dogs
Aids to a Successful Adoption
  • Before bringing the animal home, as a family, determine the rules of the house for the animal. For example, will a dog be allowed on the couch or will a cat be allowed on the countertop? By determining these rules in advance, everyone in the household will be able to act consistently, providing a predictable structure for your new pet's adjustment.
  • For the first few days after the animal is brought home, let it explore it's new environment at it's own pace. During this time try to keep the environment calm. Wait for your new pet to settle in before inviting friends to meet the newest member of your family.
  • Be patient. It may take a few days before the pet feels comfortable enough to play and a few weeks before it can bond with it's new family.
  • Animals sometimes feel threatened when hugged, or if a person's face gets too close to theirs. For the first few weeks, let your new pet come to you first while you keep the experience calm and rewarding.
  • The natural enthusiasm of young children can sometimes be overwhelming to a new pet. Provide the animal with a private space to call its own and help children understand when the animal is uncomfortable and needs some time alone.
  • Assume that you will have some challenges and will need to do some training before your new pet understands what you expect of it. Every animal is shaped by its own personality and experience; even two animals of the same breed may be totally different in their behavior. Although it is difficult not to compare new pets to previous ones, try to keep yourself open to the unique needs and character of each new pet.
